Tadej Pogacar won the European Championships road race on October 5, 2025, with a dominant 75km solo attack.
What happened?
He beat Remco Evenepoel into second place, leading the Belgian home by 31 seconds.
Tadej Pogacar is now the reigning champion at the Tour de France, the Worlds, and the European Championships.
Why it matters for Tadej Pogacar
The Slovenian cyclist has had a dominant season, winning three of the sport's five historic Monument races.
The 203.1km course featured three circuits around the commune of Guilherand-Granges, including 3,300m of total climbing.
What comes next?
Next year’s European Championships will take place in Pogacar’s home nation of Slovenia, as he seeks to become the first-ever repeat winner of the men’s race.
Teenage Frenchman Paul Seixas produced an outstanding ride to take bronze, with the championships taking place in the commune of Guilherand-Granges, just over one hour from his hometown of Lyon.
Vuelta a Espana champion Jonas Vingegaard was dropped with 110km remaining, having been tempted to this edition of the European Championships by its elevation.
Pogacar opted to attack early, launching the decisive move with 75km remaining, and extended his lead to over a minute.
Evenepoel led the chase alongside Seixas, Juan Ayuso, and Christian Scaroni, though the quartet failed to work together effectively.
Frustrated, Evenepoel attacked with 35km remaining, but Pogacar was holding his pursuer at arm’s length.
Pogacar soft-pedalled over the line as Evenepoel watched his rival’s supremacy this season, though the blow will be softened by his time trial victory on Wednesday.
Behind the leading pair, Seixas attacked on the sharp ascent of the Côte du Val d’Enfer, dropping Ayuso with five kilometres remaining, and Scaroni two kilometres later.
The 19-year-old Seixas is considered one of the brightest prospects since Pogacar himself, having finished eighth in the Criterium du Dauphine and won the Tour de l’Avenir this season.
Another of his age-group rivals, Belgium’s Jarno Widar, impressively won the junior race, and both will race on the senior WorldTour next season.
